Highway and Roadway Design Engineer

GFT is experiencing exciting growth, and we are seeking a talented Highway and Roadway Design Engineer to join our Transportation group. This position is primarily hybrid, requiring at least 3 days per week of in-office attendance at our locations in Kansas City, MO or Wichita, KS.

As part of our roadway team, you will work on impactful projects that enhance transportation infrastructure and improve community connectivity. Your contributions will focus on highways, bridges, and traffic engineering, where we prioritize resilient and sustainable designs that provide innovative solutions to the challenges of contemporary, multimodal roadway systems.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Execute engineering design tasks for roadway projects from concept through to final design, including construction support.
  • Prepare plans, specifications, cost estimates, and complete final bid packages.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with client technical staff and project managers.
  • Guide and mentor junior engineers through project assignments.
  • Participate in internal and external meetings to ensure project success.
  • Coordinate design activities and meetings with design teams, subconsultants, and client managers.
  • Oversee planning, staffing, scheduling, budget management, and quality control for subconsultants and internal staff.
  • Contribute to project decision-making regarding technical approaches, cost, and scheduling performance.
  • Lead projects and ensure tasks are completed on schedule and within budget using multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ensure quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) for projects.
  • Assist project managers with various additional tasks as needed.
  • Effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring productivity.
  • Demonstrate initiative and effectively complete tasks independently.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Kansas; additional state licensure is advantageous.
  • 8-12 years of engineering experience with a deep knowledge of transportation design and strong skills in highway design.
  • Experience with projects related to State Departments of Transportation (DOT) or local municipalities/counties.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation, OpenRoads, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication abilities.
  • A collaborative spirit, self-motivation, and a commitment to continuous learning.

Location: Kansas City, MO

Compensation: The salary range for this position is $90,000-$115,000, with compensation based on experience and geographic location.

Core Business Hours: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Employment Status: Full-Time. A criminal background check will be required for all advertised positions at GFT.
